All,
We have rescheduled the April Book Discussion as a virtual event using the Zoom platform.
1) If you have signed up for the discussion on Meetup, you have access to the Zoom link for the meeting.
2) If you are not a 'regular' attendee and have not signed up for the discussion on Meetup but plan on attending, please send us an e-mail (kvngough at aol.com) and we will send you an invitation to the meeting.
Here is a link to a short video that discusses how to join a Zoom meeting: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362193-How-Do-I-Join-A-Meeting-?zcid=1588
For 'regulars' to the book discussion, we will be scheduling a 'test' meeting tomorrow, Sat., 4/11 from 3 to 3:30. Details will be in an e-mail that we will send out shortly (and it will include the link for the 4/18 discussion). If anyone who does not receive an e-mail would like to participate in the test, please contact us at the e-mail above in point #2.
Hope you and your family are safe and well,
Kevin & Paula

All,
We plan to hold the book discussion 'virtually' (online) on April 18, so please keep it on your schedule. I will be sending out the instructions as soon as the platform for HAC events is determined. (I've had good experiences with Zoom recently but we need a paid subscription for events over 40 min.)
Stay tuned - and stay safe and well,Kevin & Paula

Subject: April 2020 Book Discussion: "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett (Postponed from March) & Tentative Schedule

All - See below - March's book, Pillars of the Earth, is moved to April due to the "rest of the month" closure of the UU in Hamden.
With the coronavirus uncertainty, Paula & I have no idea at this point if our planned May Barge-and-Bike in the Netherlands/Belgium will happen. If it does not, we will have a book discussion in May and our schedule will be:
May 16: Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Resa AslamJune 20: The Book of Separation: A Memoir by Tova MirvisJuly 18: Natural Causes: An Epidemic of Wellness, the Certainty of Dying, and Killing Ourselves to Live Longer by Barbara Ehrenreich
(The last a potentially ironic title given the pandemic.....)
All this is subject to change based on closure and travel restrictions. I will update when we know more.

Our book for April is Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. The discussion will take place Saturday, April 18, 2020 at 2:30 pm in the Library of the Unitarian Society of New Haven at 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden.

“…[An]historical novel of gripping readability, authentic atmosphere, and memorablecharacterization. Beginning with a mystery that casts its shadow, the narrativeis a seesaw of tension, suspense, impeccable pacing . . . action, intrigue, violence, passion, greed, bravery, dedication, revenge, and love. A love thatentertains, instructs, and satisfies on a grand scale." —PublishersWeekly  “[M]y interest in philosophy stemmed from the agonizing conflict I hadover whether or not I believed in my parents' religion. In the end, Icompletely rejected it. I'm not a religious person. I'm an atheist. I ended upbeing the absolute opposite of my parents." –Ken Follett, Huffington Post interview, 2014
Note: This is a long (almost 1,000 pages) book but it is a page turner, so start now and you will be able to easily get through it.
Light snacks will be served.
