Thanks Gail for mentioning this event. I really enjoyed participating as a reader AND observer/listener at least year's Juneteenth library celebration. I wholeheartedly encourage others to volunteer to do so this year!
Peace,

Our own John Connell read last year.It IS the same day as the HAC picnic & (I think ) HAC Book Discussion, but it is possible to attend this event for an hour or so and still go to one or both of the other 2 events - the Hamden Miller library is not far from USNH:

Juneteenth READ-IN Volunteer Opportunity

| Volunteers are needed for our second annual Juneteenth READ-IN. Due to the success of last year's Read-In, we are expanding the hours for folks to read and listen, which means we need more readers! The Read-In is from 10:00am through 4:15pm on Saturday, June 21. Readers can be people of any age - yes, even toddlers can join their caregivers in sharing their favorite African American author. We invite people to share readings in another language, too. Here is what to expect if you would like to be a reader:
   - Readings must be work done by an African American author. Examples of readings include part of a book [fiction or nonfiction], a poem, lyrics to a song, a sermon, essay, judicial opinion,...etc.].
   - Reading segments are 15 minutes long, which includes setting up, introducing what you are reading, then reading, and answering any questions from the audience.
   - You will be reading aloud in front of people.
   - You may read your own writing or that of a local author.
   - We are scheduling children and family friendly readings to take place earlier in the day.
   - More mature readings will be heard later in the day.
If you want to be part of the day but do not want to read, we have other volunteer opportunities. These include helping with reading support [registering and greeting readers], public greeters [direct people to the areas in the library where the readings are being held], event decorators [help design decorations for the spaces being used], and American Sign Language Interpreters. Please complete this volunteer form to be part of Reading is Freedom Juneteenth READ-IN  [click on the button below] by May 19.   |
