I'm looking forward to our meeting this coming Saturday at USNH, 700
Hartford Turnpike in Hamden.
What we will be hearing is not the full speech, but it will be a good
part of it. I think you will find the Ossie Davis performance of the
Frederick Douglass historic speech easy to follow and compelling, and it
will make for good discussion.
You don't need to do any homework in advance, but if you're curious, you
may want to see the Wikipedia write-up at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_to_the_Slave_Is_the_Fourth_of_July%3F
and if you get really ambitious, you may want to look at the annotated
speech at
https://daily.jstor.org/what-to-the-slave-is-the-fourth-of-july-annotated/
The potluck dinner is 1:30 pm to 2:15 pm, the Ossie Davis Frederick
Douglass performance is until 3:00pm, and then we will have the
discussion until around 3:30pm.
Please bring a dish to share (note the comment below about baked goods).
See you then.
Manny
