Our book for October is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The discussion will take place Saturday, October 26, 2019 [note: this is the fourth Saturday rather than our usual meeting date of the third Saturday] at 2:30 pm in the Children's Chapel of the Unitarian Society of New Haven at 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden.

>From Amazon:
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: thepoor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school sheattends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starrwitnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the handsof a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some arecalling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters aretaking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord tryto intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what reallywent down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

“Though Thomas’s story is heartbreakingly topical, itsgreatest strength is in its authentic depiction of a teenage girl, her lovingfamily, and her attempts to reconcile what she knows to be true about their liveswith the way those lives are depicted – and completely undervalued – by societyat large.” – Publishers Weekly (starred review)

I am pleased to announce that the discussion will be moderated by MarthaBrackeen-Harris, former director of Community Outreach at Renbrook School.A classroom teacher and administrator in both public and independent schoolsfor over 40 years, her work has focused on issues of diversity in order to makeeducational communities places where all members feel included in the fighttowards equity and justice. She has conducted diversity workshops, facilitatedbook talks, and spoken about civil rights in the greater Hartford community and nationally.

Light snacks will be served.
