HAC
Conversations June 08, 2013, 2:30 p.m.

Hello Everyone,

This
Saturday's meeting of HAC Conversations will view the full length
file The Soloist, 116 mins. with Robert Downey, Jr and Jaime
Fox. When I brought up this movie at a previous Conversations there
was considerable enthusiasm and perhaps some of you have since seen
it. If you're wondering why you should take a look at one or both
of the following videos.

The
following URLs are for short TED Talks by Robert Gupta, violinist,
that both introduce Nathaniel Ayers who is one of the subjects of the
movie and talk about music enabling a bridge to fundamental
processes of the mind.

Music
is medicine, music is sanity.
Robert Gupta, violinist with the LA Philharmonic. Here he describes
meeting Nathaniel Ayers and describes the effects listening and
playing had on him. Filmed

more generally about music and others work with disabled persons. TEDMED 2012, Filmed

When
Robert Gupta was caught between a career as a doctor and as a
violinist, he realized his place was in the middle, with a bow in his
hand and a sense of social justice in his heart. He tells a moving
story of society’s marginalized and the power of music therapy,
which can succeed where conventional medicine fails.

Violinist
Robert Gupta joined the LA Philharmonic at the age of 19 -- and
maintains a passionate parallel interest in neurobiology and mental
health issues. He's a TED Senior Fellow.

What
is humanism? Life in
this world is the central and defining focus of humanism. We envision
a world in which every individual's worth is respected, and human
freedom and behaving responsibly are natural aspirations.
