            Dear Cary,

            Of all the values you and I hold dear, one of the most important—and most endangered—is the separation between church and state. That is why it is so important that you and I take action today, against the National Day of Prayer, with our secular alternative, the National Day of Reason.

            I'd like you to consider doing two things right now:

              1.. Contact your House Representative and let him or her know of your support for Rep. Pete Stark's proclamation recognizing today as the National Day of Reason. 
              2.. Become a member of the American Humanist Association to keep up our important work protecting church-state separation and standing up for reason. 
            We are proud to have worked with Representative Pete Stark (CA), who issued a House proclamation declaring today as the National Day of Reason. On the House floor, Rep. Stark said

                 "The National Day of Reason celebrates the application of reason and the positive impact it has had on humanity. It is also an opportunity to reaffirm the Constitutional separation of religion and government. I encourage everyone to join in observing this day and focusing upon the employment of reason, critical thinking, the scientific method, and free inquiry to improve our world and our nation." 

            There has never been a more important time to stand up for reason. Your taxpayer dollars continue to support organizations that discriminate based on religion, or lack thereof, in hiring practices. Local governments are introducing bills to bring mandatory Bible study back in public schools.

            The Religious Right and supporters of the National Day of Prayer are clear: they want to turn the United States into a Christian nation. They will use all the money and power at their disposal to influence lawmakers and voters to support the intrusion of religion in all aspects of the public.

            This is our opportunity to tell our elected leaders that reason—not prayer—should be the guiding force for public policy in America.

            Please take a moment to contact your Representative right now, and join the American Humanist Association to show your support for the National Day of Reason.
