USNH CINEMA FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, USNH SOCIAL HALL, 6:30 PM OPTIONAL POTLUCK
DINNER, FILM PROMPTLY AT 7:00 PM. This month's selection, co-sponsored by
the Adult Religious Education Committee and the Economic Justice Action
Group, is "The Flaw," an informative and entertaining film on the current
crisis in capitalism, featuring economists Robert Shiller (Yale) and Joseph
Stiglitz (Columbia). In his 2001 Nobel Prize lecture, Stiglitz vigorously
challenged Adam Smith's notion (1776) that free markets, without government
intervention, lead to efficient outcomes "as if by an invisible hand," and
argued "that the reason that the hand may be invisible is that it is simply
not there - or at least that if it is there, it is palsied." The film is
just 78 minutes long, offering ample time for a full discussion afterward.
You are all warmly invited to join in!
